International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. You can find information about Florence Nightingale on the Florence Nightingale International Foundation (FNIF) web site and the Girl Child Education Fund.
"Delivering Quality, Serving Communities: Nurses Leading Care Innovations" is this year's theme for International Nurses Day. The International Council of Nurses commemorates this important day each year with the production and distribution of the International Nurses' Day (IND) kit. Previews of the IND Kits, archives and past themes of IND 1988-2009 are posted on the ICN web site. The IND kit contains educational and public information materials, for use by nurses everywhere.
On this page you will find items you can purchase and links that will help you plan and celebrate the nursing profession making your special event a success.
E-mail us and let us know what you and/or your facility are doing to celebrate International Nursing day. Please keep it brief (150 words or less) and send pictures in JPEG format. Some of your submissions could be posted on the ICN web site or published in The International Nursing Review, so please include your permission to print with your e-mail.

It contains support material including a nurse staffing assessment tool, a list of activities for nurses to improve safe staffing, a fact sheet, a sample press release, a sample power point presentation and examples of nurse-patient ratios. It also includes a backgrounder on safe staffing with essential information to consider when discussing safe staffing issues. (OUT OF STOCK) |
Nurses for Patient Safety: Targeting Counterfeit and Substandard Medicines
The 2005 IND theme aims to increase awareness of the existence and consequences of counterfeit medicines; provide tools to identify counterfeits and report any suspicious medicines; encourage nurses and other health professionals to lobby governments and regulatory authorities for attention to the existence and dangers of counterfeit and substandard medicines. By targeting counterfeit medicines, nurses can help ensure the safety of patients and restore the public's trust in health care systems.

The White Heart pin - Symbol for Nursing
![]() |
The white heart is the universal symbol for nursing. It is meant to characterize the caring, knowledge and humanity that infuse the work and spirit of nursing. The white heart is also a unifying symbol for nurses globally. White was selected because it brings together all colours, demonstrating nursing’s acceptance of all people. White also has a worldwide association with nursing, caring, hygiene and comfort. The heart shape communicates humanity and the central place that nursing has in quality health care.
All proceeds from the sales of the White Heart pin will go to the ICN's Florence Nightingale International Foundation in support of the Girl Child project. |
