Former Girl Child Education Fund student wins second award for fighting HIV stigma

In January 2020 the International Council of Nurses (ICN) reported that Sharon Amongi, a young woman whose education had been supported by its Girl Child Education Fund (GCEF), had won a prestigious award for fighting HIV stigma.

ICN is pleased to announce that Ms Amongi has won a second award for being the Most Outstanding Peer Mentor of the Year by the Uganda Network of Young People Living With HIV/AIDS.

Ms Amongi’s work includes traveling around Uganda speaking to young people who are HIV-positive, visiting those who have become ‘lost’ to the healthcare systems that can support them, and hosting a monthly radio programme, aimed at helping young people to deal with the problems they are facing.

ICN commends Ms Amongi for the amazing example she is setting and for her continuing tireless work for the benefit of young people in Uganda who are HIV-positive.

About the GCEF

The GCEF supports the primary and secondary schooling of girls under the age of 18 in developing countries whose nurse parent or parents have died.

Donations to the fund go towards the costs of school fees, uniforms, shoes and books.

So far, more than 350 girls have benefited from the scheme and it is currently supporting 80 girls in Kenya, eSwatini (formerly Swaziland), Uganda and Zambia.
