An esteemed group of nurse leaders from Bahrain have produced a new book recounting the history of nursing successes in their country over the past 100 years.

A Century of Nursing in Bahrain1900-2020: A Journey of Service and Empowerment, chronicles the development of the nursing and midwifery education and practice, and its impact on the Bahraini population.

It recounts the birth of nurse education in Bahrain and reveals how progress within nursing and midwifery has led to an amazing increase in life expectancy in the past 75 years, from 39.7 years in 1959 to 81.5 in 2024 – a real life example of nursing’s power to change the world.

The book also lays out a road map for the future of nursing, midwifery and health care for all.

Co-author Mrs. Batool Al Muhandis said: “The book used a historical research methodology consolidating oral histories, interviews, archival records, and personal accounts into an easily accessible narrative on nursing education, practice, research, innovation and regulation.’

Co-author Dr Mouza Suwaielh added that the book is “for the nurses who came before us, the ones beside us, and the ones yet to come.”
