The BNA was founded in 1936 by Eunice Gibson, a pioneer nurse who advocated for better working conditions and unity among nurses. The BNA was incorporated in 1943 and has a Trade Union (SEW & Industrial Relations) Status. Therefore, it negotiates with the government and other institutions for its members' terms and conditions of service. It also provides professional development, education and training, and outreach programs for its members and the public.
