Today, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) announced the winners of its International Nurses Day (IND) 2021 Photo Contest.
Launched to celebrate IND 2021 with the theme “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A Vision for Future Healthcare”, the contest invited submissions of photographs to highlight the critical role of nurses and how they are shaping the future of healthcare in different contexts and places around the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has shone a spotlight on the incredible work of nurses throughout this difficult year and this was portrayed in the array of photographs received.
ICN received a total of 200 submissions from 22 countries.
The Grand Prize winner was Bruno Lavi from Israel, whose beautiful black and white photo of nurse Rawan Hijana dressed in her mask and shield, perfectly illustrated the reality of this pandemic. Mr Lavi will receive two free registrations to the ICN 2021 Virtual Congress to be held 2-4 November and his photograph will be released on International Nurses Day, 12 May, when it will be used as the cover of the IND 2021 report to be released on 12 May.
ICN President Annette Kennedy said, “The photographs submitted for the IND photo contest illustrate the incredible breadth of the work that nurses do, in the home, the community, in hospitals, with young and old, all day and all night. Throughout this pandemic, nurses are not only caring for those with COVID-19, but continuing to provide education, prevention, treatment and care for those with a wide range of healthcare needs. We thank everyone who sent in their images to help us celebrate and honour nurses on International Nurse Day and throughout the year!
Winners were also selected under four categories : Hospital/Clinic based; Educational; Community Nursing/Homecare; and Emergency. The winning photographs will be released during the 100-day countdown to IND which is being launched today. During these 100 days, ICN will release a variety of IND resources, including case studies, fact sheets and posters.
