On the eve of 2020, the International Year of the Nurse and the Midwife, the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has launched a new interactive timeline, celebrating its 120-year history.
The timeline takes users on an interactive journey through the 12 decades of ICN, from its founding on 1 July 1899 during the women’s suffrage movement through the highs and lows, successes and challenges of the last 120 years, culminating in a look towards the future of ICN and nursing.
Research for the timeline was carried out by Professor Marie Carney, Dean Emeritus and postdoctoral research fellow at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. A 120th exhibition was launched at the ICN Congress in Singapore earlier this year.
ICN President, Annette Kennedy said:
“Over the past 120 years, ICN has served nurses. As we approach 2020, the International Year of the Nurse, we shall continue to ensure that the nursing profession is represented at the highest levels of policy making and that nurses receive the investment, recognition and value they deserve.’
“By looking back at our history and learning from the great figures of nursing such as Florence Nightingale and ICN’s own founder Ethel Gordon Fenwick, we are empowered to continue their legacy into the future.”
The 120th timeline is the first of many resources and events which ICN is showcasing in 2020.
