The International Council of Nurses (ICN) has launched a series of three posters for International Nurses Day (IND) 2020 under the theme Nurses: A Voice to Lead, Nursing the World to Health.

The posters reflect the diversity of nurses’ work around the world, caring for all in a variety of settings and often under difficult circumstances.

“We are delighted to be launching these important resources for nurses around the world,” said Annette Kennedy, ICN President, “We encourage the public, governments and other health professionals to help us promote the work of nurses during the Year of the Nurse and the Midwife”.

Howard Catton, ICN Chef Executive Officer, added “2020 will be a catalyst to jump-start a new way of looking at nursing so that, in the future, nurses will be seen for the unique contributions they bring to the wellbeing of all the people of the world. We invite you to use all the resources available to help us promote the crucial work of nurses around the world.”

IND 2020 will consist of a variety of resources to help nurses lobby their governments for more investment, and to help the public understand exactly what it is that nurses do and why this is so important for achieving Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals.

The IND report, which will be released in the first quarter of 2020, consists of a series of compelling stories, research and evidence presented by leading experts in nursing and health from around the world. The case studies included in the report and on the website www.icnvoicetolead.com will showcase the innovative work of nurses to provide safe, affordable, holistic care to people from all walks of life. Next year’s celebrations will be extra special because the World Health Organization (WHO) has designated 2020 as The Year of the Nurse and Midwife, and because it will be the 200th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. To mark the occasion, ICN is planning and coordinating a wide range of activities throughout the year. ICN, Nursing Now and WHO are working closely together on plans for 2020 and a new visual identity for the year will be launched shortly.

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth. ICN commemorates this important day each year by selecting a theme and producing and distributing IND resources and evidence.
