The world is evolving rapidly, with rising burden of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and the persistent threat of Communicable diseases. The role of nurses in preventive, curative, palliative, and rehabilitative care are more vital now than ever before. Global issues like climate change, migration, role of artificial intelligence, workforce shortages and potential future pandemics highlights the need for a strong nursing workforce to bolster health systems worldwide. Organizations such as the International Council of Nurses (ICN), World Health Organization (WHO), the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) and other global health partners are crucial in the global advocacy at strengthening health systems, addressing the social determinants of health and ensuring equitable access to safe and quality health care for all populations. The role of the ICN cannot be overemphasized. However, a key challenge may be its inadequate financial capacity to spearhead projects in this direction.
Increasing membership of the ICN and ensuring National Nursing Associations (NNAs) pay dues on time will be essential for the organization’s sustainability. My vision for ICN’s future is for it to remain the global voice for nurses, fostering stronger collaborations with WHO, CGFNS, ICM and other global partners and projecting the role of the nursing profession from the cradle to the grave. This can be achieved through powerful story telling on who nurses are and what we do. I also envision ICN offering more interactive platforms, like ODENNA, to enable NNA members to network regionally and globally. Additionally, helping to build the leadership skills NNAs and creating training opportunities for members of the NNAs to feel the ICN first hand would enhance appreciation for ICN’s work and the need to belong. Research projects and nurse led initiatives with funding from ICNs partners will enhance visibility of NNAs and the ICN. Standardization of nursing education globally will enhance competitiveness of the profession and improve conditions for nurses worldwide.
I am confident I can contribute meaningfully to ICN as a Board member, helping the organization grow and increase its global impact. Thank you for your consideration.
