Nurses work closely with women and children throughout the life course. In addition to providing primary health services and lifesaving treatments when needed, nurses also assure that both mother and child receive care from specialist colleagues such as obstetricians, gynecologists, midwives and pediatricians, as necessary. ICN works to achieve accelerated reduction of maternal, newborn, and child mortality, and promote universal coverage of essential interventions throughout a continuum of care
On 12 December 2012, the United Nations unanimously endorsed the concept of Universal Health Coverage, the most ambitious and comprehensive political declaration on health in history. That event is commemorated each year by the designation of 12 December as Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day.
