Adelaida Zabalegui has been a nurse since 1982 in Spain. She holds a master’s and Ph.D. in Nursing from New York University (1997), where she was a Fellow of the Spanish Ministry of Health. In 2023, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine at Turku University in Finland. She has served as Assistant Director of Nursing at Bellevue Hospital in New York City and as director of Nursing and Vice Dean of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences at Universitat Internacional de Catalunya
She is currently Deputy Director of Nursing at Hospital Clínic Barcelona, and Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona. As a full professor and advanced researcher specializing in elderly care, Dr. Zabalegui has published over 300 articles and directed 26 doctoral theses. She is a former editor of the Spanish version of the journal "Nursing." Dr. Zabalegui is also a board member of the European Academy of Nursing Science (EANS) and the Nursing Now Campaign/Nursing Now Challenge, representing Europe. Furthermore, she serves as President of the Catalan Nursing Directors Association.
